If you love seafood, Costa Maya and Mahahual is for you. There are plenty of restaurants that sell fish and seafood along the malecon. Also if you wish you can buy fish from fishermen, there are guys walking around every day with fresh caught fish and lobster to sell. One guy just came by my office with some fish he just caught with a net. I was eating so much fish the doctor told me to cut back, I had developed a kind of bone spur on my foot from eating fish everyday and taking fish oil vitamins. So I quit eating fish for a month like she said, and my spur is gone. By the way I am impressed with the doctors here in Costa Maya, they seem to know what they are doing, and are very helpful. A lot of the locals spear fish here, and in the afternoons here you can watch the boats arrive from a day of fishing and see their catch. Cerviche, whole fried fish, lobster, and of course shrimp are all in abundance here on the malecon in Mahahual. I have had snapper, hog fish, grouper, and even lion fish in the last couple of months. The fish here is excellent and there is something abut the taste of fresh caught fish that is hard to beat. I had some cerviche the other day that even had octopus and squid in it. The shrimp cocktails here also are very good. But the most popular thing here with he Mexican Nationals is whole fried fish served on the beach. Even when I lived in Caldaritas,Mexico,I noticed when I went to the beach how popular fried fish was there. You hardly ever see grilled fish here at all, it s always dropped in the fryer. Pedro at the Tropicante made fried fish with garlic the other day and I tried it and it was excellent. You can also get fish tacos, shrimp empanadas and quesidillas, and fish soup, and anything else you can think of that comes from the sea. I eat local when I eat and I try to experience a lot of different Mexican and Caribbean dishes, but I draw the line on cabezza de res tacos(cow brain tacos), they are popular here but I will not eat them. In fact a couple of weeks ago this American woman was telling me about these great tacos that she had just ate, and I had to inform her what she just ate was cow brain tacos, and she freaked out and starting saying she was afraid she was going to get Mad cows disease, and I just laughed. I learned in Belize always ask what you are eating before you are eating it,so you will not be surprised. I also ad some carnita last Saturday, which is a whole pig cooked in a large pot and then cut up like southern BBQ in the USA. The food is good here and usually pretty cheap, in fact it is cheaper for me to eat out or get something to go, than cook myself. Also being a diabetic the food here seems to be pretty healthy and not bad on your blood sugar. I am posting some pictures of the fishermen here and some of the things I have eaten lately. People on Facebook seem to love pictures of food, so I am putting some here to see what kind of reaction I get. But if you love seafood this is the place for you.
